If I have to do a large stage or an outdoor venue, I'll use my "big" rig: 550 watts into a pair of 112 cabs. 500 watts and a 210 is often a good balance between all the factors: expense, weight, volume/performance. Surprisingly loud for 28 pounds.) But if your drummer is a little heavy handed and your guitar player is pretty free with his volume knob.maybe not. Obviously no one wants to do that, so we ride a lot closer to the edge where there isn't a lot of headroom.Ĭould you get away with a 250w* 12" combo like my Hartke KB12 "Kickback?" Probably. For us to have that kind of headroom we'd need to carry around an 8x10 "fridge" and over 500 watts to throw at it. Physics being what it is, bass players don't have it so easy. And you can carry it in one hand and it fits easily in the backseat of your car. They can show up with a 50w 12" combo and be guaranteed to have the headroom–in speaker capability and wattage–to play at any volume, even deafening ones. I think a lot depends on how loud your band plays. The Peavey stuff will tend to be on the heavier side though. All built like tanks and great sounding amps. And I’ve gotten a few Fender rumble combos that I’ve gotten in trades and while they sound pretty good but they’ve had a lot of technical issues like cold solder joints in multiple spots on their boards.Īlso on the lower end price sprectrum for the used market check into the Hartke LH heads and the Hydrive cabs or older Peavey stuff.
#Best bass amp series#
I’ve heard lots of complaints about the GK blackline series and pretty much all the Behringer bass amps. I’m suggesting used because inflation in gear is a thing right now and you may be able to find something new for that price but not near the performance level and quality level. You could probably find a decent used cab around $200-300. In combination with a decent 410 cab you’ve got a great workhorse. It’s got a ton of headroom and is very clean & tight. It’s been toured, used and abused but has had no issues whatsoever. I’d recommend a used Markbass LMIII head.
